May 8, 2026: Pandemonium & Independence

There were a number of interesting events today, plus a couple of milestones for the Kestrel chicks. I saw the Father Kestrel enter the box for the fist time since the chicks hatched, although the Mother Kestrel instantly chased him off (so unfortunately I was not able to catch this on camera). Also new is that he has started to deliver prey by tossing it in the box before quickly flying away, which results in absolute pandemonium if the Mother Kestrel is not there! The chicks don’t seem quite able to process the prey on their own yet, so the Mother Kestrel is still later slicing and serving their meals. A cloak of pin feathers is now prominent on the chicks’ backs. Lastly, this evening was the first the chicks have spent alone.

Peace and quiet before the next feeding frenzy.
This is the first time I’ve seen prey delivered by the Father Kestrel via a ‘toss & fly’ maneuver, when the Mother Kestrel was not there. Absolute pandemonium!
All five chicks can be clearly seen in this video of another feeding session with the Mother Kestrel. Note the cape-like look on the backs of the chicks, where more pin feather are starting to come in.
The chicks were left on their own overnight for the first time.
