May 7, 2026: Feeding Time Tug of War

The Mother Kestrel continues to rip up the prey to feed the chicks, but they are now constantly trying to grab the whole meal from her to try to gulp it down whole. Feeding time now ends with one chick usually succeeding, gulping down the remaining hind-end of the prey such that the tail hangs rather comedically out of the chick’s beak. In the evening, the chicks are too big now to all fit beneath their Mother, but she sweetly covers them with an outstretched wing.

Feeding Time Part I: This video shows how the chicks incessantly try to grab the prey (a lizard) from the Mother Kestrel, sometimes succeeding. She takes it back and continues to distribute the meal in smaller pieces.
Feeding Time Part II: Continued tug-of-war with the prey between the Mother Kestrel and her chicks.
Feeding Time Part III: A chick is finally successful in grabbing and gulping! This video also shows how the chicks immediately go quiet as soon as the parent leaves the nest box.
