May 3, 2026: Pin Feathers

The Kestrel chicks are now one week old, and what a difference a week makes!: Pin feathers are now visible on the nestlings, their beaks have grown, eyes are wide open, and it’s getting difficult for everyone to fit underneath the Mother bird at night.

In this video, the Mother Kestrel carefully feeds a lizard to the chicks, moving around the nest to administer to different chicks. Look carefully to see the pin feathers beginning to be visible on the chicks.
The female Kestrel continues to keep the chicks warm at night. Note the chicks’ pin feathers are coming in, which appear in this video as little black dots on either side of their body.
